Best practices for maintaining a clean .htaccess configuration

Keep your redirect rules simple and linear

Try to avoid long redirect chains and mixed rules that send traffic back and forth between different URLs. Whenever you migrate URLs or redesign a site, update the old rules instead of stacking new ones on top of them.

Separate SEO redirects from temporary and technical rules

Group long-term 301 redirects, temporary 302 rules, maintenance pages and security- related directives into clearly commented sections. This makes it easier to debug issues when something breaks after a deployment.

Test on staging and monitor after deployment
